FAQs

What’s the difference between a rugby headguard and a rugby helmet?

While some people refer to headguards as "rugby helmets", this term isn’t accurate. Rugby headguards (or scrum caps) are soft-shelled and designed to meet World Rugby Regulation 12, unlike hard-shelled helmets used in other sports. Our Hedkayse R5 is part of a new generation of headguards made for rugby players who demand top-quality rugby headguards that meet the needs of modern play.

Is it worth paying more for the Hedkayse R5?

We know the R5 is priced above standard scrum caps — and there’s a reason for that. It’s the only rugby headguard to feature Enkayse®, our world-first, high-performance foam padding. Combined with full head coverage, a replaceable chin strap, and customisation options, it’s designed for players who want elite performance and long-term durability, not just basic protection.

Who is the R5 for?

The Hedkayse R5 is suitable for players of all ages and levels, from school rugby training sessions to elite-level rugby competitions. It’s available in youth and adult sizes, with a wide range of colour and personalisation options. Our sizing guide helps you find the perfect size, whether you're new to the game of rugby or playing professionally.

Are rugby headguards mandatory?

Not globally — but they are mandatory for under 18s in Japan, and we fully support this progressive policy. We believe Japan is ahead of the game in making headguards a standard part of essential rugby equipment for youth players. We'd welcome a similar approach being adopted more widely.

What features make the Hedkayse R5 different?
  • All-round head coverage with no lacing or weak spots
  • Slimline fit, similar to regular scrum caps
  • Enkayse® performance foam padding – unique to Hedkayse
  • Zero reduction in hearing – crucial for communication on the rugby field
  • Machine washable with antimicrobial fabric
  • Replaceable chin strap for longevity
  • Bespoke options for clubs and schools
  • Available in youth and adult sizes
What injuries can headguards help manage?

While headguards do not prevent concussion or serious brain injuries, they can play a role in reducing the risk of surface injuries such as cuts, abrasions, and cauliflower ear — particularly for rugby forwards who are more exposed during scrums and rucks. Many players choose to wear them for added comfort and reassurance.

Is the R5 part of a larger collection?

Yes. We offer a growing collection of rugby headguards, including custom colour packs for teams. Whether you're shopping for essential rugby gear, planning ahead for rugby competitions, or equipping a school or club, Hedkayse offers flexible options to suit your needs.

Is the Hedkayse R5 sustainable?

We design with longevity and reuse in mind. The R5 features a replaceable chin strap, machine washable materials, and long-lasting durable materials, all contributing to Sustainable Performance over time. It's built to withstand the demands of the game without sacrificing comfort or performance.

Who are Hedkayse?
